If you prefer a human voice, or you are out of credits, record the narration yourself in the recording studio. It works in the browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone. Recording, uploading and editing audio never cost credits.

Open the recording studio

  1. Open the artwork and choose the language.

  2. To record one paragraph, open its … menu and choose Record this paragraph. To record them all in a row, press Record all.

  3. The first time, read We are going to use your microphone and press Allow the microphone. Your browser asks for permission.

  4. In Test the microphone, choose the Microphone and say a few words: the bar should move in green and yellow, without reaching red.

  5. Press Start recording.

The studio fills the screen. The paragraph appears in large type, like a teleprompter, with the previous and the next one fainter below.

Record and accept takes

  1. Press Record and read the paragraph aloud. If you turned on the 3-second countdown, wait for it.

  2. Press Stop. The take plays back on its own.

  3. If you like it, press Accept and continue to move to the next paragraph. If not, press Record again.

While you record you see the live waveform and the microphone level. If you are too quiet or too loud, the studio tells you to speak a little louder or to move away from the microphone. Progress is shown at the top, for example 4 of 10 paragraphs recorded.

On a phone, large Record, Stop, Repeat and Next buttons sit within reach of your thumb.

Each take is saved in your space the moment you accept it, so closing the tab never loses accepted work. A paragraph keeps up to 5 takes; mark the one you want with Use this one. To record a sixth, delete one first.

Edit a take

In the list of takes of a paragraph, press Edit the waveform to open Edit the recording. The original take is never changed, so you can always go Back to the original.

  • Drag over the waveform to select a part, then use Trim to the selection to keep it or Delete the selection to remove it.
  • Use Join with another take to add another take of the same paragraph at the end.
  • Use Undo to step back.
  • Under Automatic, keep or turn off Remove the silence at the start and the end, Even out the volume and Reduce background noise.

Press Save the edit. The audio is processed in a few seconds and replaces the paragraph's audio.

Upload an existing recording

If you already have the audio, upload it instead of recording. Muvo accepts MP3, M4A, WAV and OGG files up to 50 MB.

  • For one paragraph: open the paragraph's … menu and choose Upload an audio. It becomes a new take of that paragraph.
  • For a full narration: open More recording options next to Record all and choose Upload the full narration…. In Cut the narration you see the whole waveform with the text alongside; drag the red markers to where each paragraph ends, listen to each one and press Cut into N paragraphs.

Good to know

  • An artwork can mix AI and recorded paragraphs. The editor warns you that visitors will hear different voices from one paragraph to the next.
  • If you change the text of a recorded paragraph, its audio is marked out of date and the editor asks you to Record again.
  • Recorded audio is levelled to sound as loud as the AI voice, so paragraphs play smoothly one after another.
  • Recordings reach visitors when you publish the artwork, like any other audio.

The AI voice never replaces a recording on its own. Generate what is pending skips recorded paragraphs, even when they are out of date. See Generate the AI voice of your texts.
