Soft background music can give your audio guide atmosphere. You choose one track for the whole space and its volume, and Muvo plays it under the voice in every artwork. Visitors who prefer the voice alone can turn it off.

Choose a track

Only administrators can change the music. Tracks come from Muvo's own catalogue; you cannot upload your own.

  1. Go to Settings → Voice and music.

  2. In the Background music card, press the play button on a track to preview it.

  3. Select the track you want, or No music to have none.

  4. Set the Music volume with the slider.

  5. Press Save.

Music is a setting of the space, not of each artwork, and it costs nothing. You don't need to generate audio again or republish: the player uses the new music and volume straight away.

Set the volume

The slider goes from 0 % to 100 %. The voice always comes first: Muvo keeps the music well below it, even at the top of the slider. Between 20 % and 40 % usually works well. The track previews in this card play at the volume you have chosen, so you can adjust it by ear.

Visitors often listen on their phone in a busy room. If in doubt, choose a lower volume: music that competes with the voice makes the commentary harder to follow.

How the music goes with the voice

When a visitor plays an artwork from the beginning, the music plays the same way every time:

MomentWhat the visitor hears
Before the voiceAbout 5 seconds of music alone.
During the voiceThe voice, with the music underneath at the chosen volume.
After the voiceAbout 5 more seconds of music, fading out over the last 3.

If the visitor pauses, the music pauses too.

Listen to it before visitors do

There are two ways to hear the music with the voice:

  • In Settings → Voice and music, the Hear how it sounds card plays the music at the chosen volume with a sample of each language's voice on top. Press Listen with voice. It follows what you have selected, even before saving.
  • In the editor of any artwork, open the arrow next to Listen to all in the bottom bar and choose Listen with background music. It plays your own paragraphs with the space's music, as visitors will hear them. Editors can use it too.

If the space has no music, the editor option tells you so, and Hear how it sounds asks you to pick a track first.

Visitors can turn it off

In the player, visitors open Reading settings and switch off Background music to listen to the voice only. The option only appears when your space has music. See How visitors listen.
