Visitors never have to choose a language before listening. When they scan a QR code, the player looks at the language their phone is set to and plays the audio guide in it, if your space has published it. If not, it plays your main language and says so.
Two different things follow the phone: the player interface (buttons, labels and notices) and the audio guide itself (the commentary and its text). They can end up in different languages. See Which languages does Muvo cover? for why.
How the player picks the language
The player reads the phone's preferred languages, in order.
The interface appears in the phone's language if it is one of the 12 player languages. Otherwise it appears in English.
If the artwork is published in the phone's language, the audio and the text play in it. A regional variant counts: a phone in American English hears your British English version if that is the one you have.
If the artwork is not published in that language, the player tries the phone's next preferred language.
If none of them is published, the audio and text play in the main language of your space.
| Phone set to | Artwork published in | Interface | Audio and text |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalan | Catalan and Spanish | Catalan | Catalan |
| German | Spanish (main) and English | German | Spanish, with a notice |
| Korean | Korean and Spanish (main) | English | Korean |
| Valencian | Catalan and Spanish (main) | Catalan | Catalan, with a notice |
The notice when a language is missing
When the player cannot use the visitor's language, it shows a discreet notice, for example «Not available in German. Listening in Spanish.», in the language of the interface. The visitor can keep listening or open the language selector.
In Statistics, You are missing these languages lists the phone languages of your visitors that none of your active languages covers. It is a good guide to which translation to add next.
Change the language by hand
The header of the player has a globe with the current language. Tapping it opens the list of languages that artwork is published in, each one written in its own language: English, Français, Euskara, 日本語…
Tap the globe in the header of the player.
Choose a language from the list.
The audio and text switch to that language. If it is one of the 12 player languages, the interface switches too.
Only published languages are listed. A translation that is still a draft, or that is not marked ready, never shows up for visitors.
Catalan and Valencian
Catalan and Valencian stand in for each other before the player falls back to your main language. A phone in Valencian hears your Catalan version if there is no Valencian one, and a phone in Catalan hears your Valencian version if there is no Catalan one. In both cases the notice tells the visitor which one is playing.
Muvo has two Valencian variants for your content, with Valencian or Catalan pronunciation. Both are written in Valencian, and visitors simply see «Valencià» in the selector.
The choice is remembered on that phone
When a visitor changes the language by hand, the player remembers it on that phone: the next artworks, the next stops of a tour and later visits open in the same language, whenever it is published. If an artwork does not have it, the usual rules apply and the notice appears.
The choice is saved in the phone's browser, together with the playback speed and text size. It does not use tracking cookies and nobody needs to sign in. Clearing the browser data, or using another phone, starts again from the phone's language.
Your main language is the safety net for every visitor, so keep it complete and published on every artwork. Administrators can change it in Settings → Languages with Make main language, but only when every published artwork already has its text published in the new one.
